Emergency Plan 2 Fire and Emergency Plan 10/30/62

A. General

1. The ship's fire detecting, fire fighting and other emergency equipment will be in place and maintained operable at all times.
2. Ship personnel shall be trained and checked out frequently in the use and location of the shipboard fire and emergency equipment and systems. This includes operation of the fire detecting systems, the CO2 fire system, oxygen breathing apparatus, personnel air system, various types of fire extinguishers, fog nozzles, etc.

B. Procedures

1. Person(s) discovering fire shall immediately notify the bridge and fight the fire with nearest available equipment.
2. The fire and emergency alarm shall be sounded; this consists of rapid ringing of the ship's bell and continuous ringing of General Alarm bell for a period of at least ten (1) seconds.

3. When the fire and emergency alarm is sounded the following actions shall proceed:

(a) Crew members shall man assigned fire and emergency stations. See Appendix at end of this plan.
(b) Fire pumps are to be started.
(c) Fire hose is to be led out in the affected area as directed.
(d) All watertight doors, ports and air shafts are to be closed.
(e) All fans and blowers are to be stopped with the exception of the reactor space ventilation system which will be controlled as follows:
- (1) The supply valve RS-40V would be closed in event of fire near the intake to prevent suction of the fire into the reactor compartment, or if the fire is in the reactor compartment to prevent admission of any fresh air to cut off the oxygen supply.
- (2) High temperature alarms are provided for the charcoal filter sections which would indicate if either filter was afire. Closing of valves RS-3V and RS-7V or RS-3V and RS-8V would permit the isolation of such a fire.
- (3) In any case it would be intended to maintain the negative pressure within the reactor compartment as long as possible.
(f) Emergency squad is to be assembled initially with equipment on the Port Side of Boat Deck, by Boat #2, then will proceed to scene of emergency as directed.
(g) Personnel assigned to arouse, warn, direct and assist passengers, shall see that passengers are warmly dressed and properly wearing life preservers.
